How do I stop and get rid of spam
An easy way to stop, reduce, get rid of spam
We are all sick of spam, it clogs up our inbox, takes time to get rid of, delete or, mark as spam, and the subject matter of some of it, is just embarrassing, especially to those that share an email address with their 'other half.'
Every one's email address is on a mailing lists of some sort or, another and some of the mail that we receive from these lists is quite welcome, but the un-solicited mail that we are talking about here, is, just a nuisance!
How do we end up on these spam lists? There are a number of ways:-
Emails with funny content (jokes etc.) are a good source for email harvesters. Emails that are copied or, forwarded to you as a member of an address book list, usually by a friend, contain your email address and are often returned back to the originator (the spammer.) Ask your friends to only 'BCC' this type of email to you, so that your email address doesn't appear in the list.
There are 'bots' that automatically crawl web pages on the internet, looking for email addresses to enter into a spam list. If you want to include your email address in a web page or, web site (such as a forum, blog or, similar) don't use the '@' sign in your email address (the 'bots' look for the '@' sign to find email addresses.) Use '(at)' instead, so: 'me@my-email.co.uk' becomes 'me(at)my-email.co.uk - it fools the 'bots' but not the 'normal people' who understand why you have done this.
We all use our email addresses to join web sites or, to register to receive information and buy things on the internet, but how many of us actually read the terms and conditions that we are agreeing to - not many! All of a sudden, we start to receive even more spam.
In the first place, it would be nice to know which of these sites are using or, have passed on our email address to send us unsolicited email and secondly, it would be convenient to have an easy way to reduce, get rid of, stop or, filter it out of our inbox.
Well now you can! Next time you use your email address for this purpose say, to join a forum in Northern Cyprus, add '+' (without the ' ') and something to it, like this - let's say your email address is me@my-email.co.uk - instead, use: me+nccforum@my-email.co.uk Most email servers are configured to ignore the '+' sign and anything that is entered after it (before the '@' sign) I have tested this system with gmail and it works! Test your own email providers system by sending yourself an email.
Then, if you start to receive spam and the address that it is being sent to is: me+nccforum@my-email.co.uk, you know where it has originated from and it is easy to filter it out of your inbox.
